This Farmer Married A Gang Rape Survivor And Has Also Joined In Her Fight For Justice

It’s not every day that you get to hear inspirational stories attached to rape victims and survivors. Even though the voice against rape is rising, rape victims and survivors are still shunned from the society, and are looked at with disgust.

Jitender Chhatar, a 29-year-old farmer from Jind district in Haryana, has added his voice against this injustice by marrying a gang rape survivor and joining in her fight for justice.

Her family members had approached Jitender’s with a marriage proposal and they readily agreed. Even after knowing her ordeal and that she had been abused and gang raped, Jitender and his family did not change their mind.

 

Jitender married the survivor in December last year and they’re happily married since. He has also enrolled her in a law course so that she knows that she’s getting proper justice and he has also aided her in her case against the accused.

“She can join the judicial services or as a lawyer can help other rape survivors. We have already started a platform called, Youth Against Rapes.”

 

The survivor was abused by Neeraj, a coaching class owner, and four others, which included a woman also. They have repeatedly been blackmailing her, and have also registered two false cases against Jitender and are demanding extortion money.

“Since the day we got engaged, except for discussion with lawyer or in court we don’t talk about my case much. I and my family owe a lot to Jitender as part from fighting off the taboo, he is also facing the ire of the accused who try to frame him in false cases.”

They also managed to nab the woman who had visited the survivor for extortion money. They are now actively fighting the case, and Jitender also seeks to get help from Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

We need more people like Jitender in India, where rape happens by the dozen every day and the survivors/victims are silenced.
