This Park In Delhi Is Made Of Waste Material From Metro Construction. How Cool Is That!

Everybody these days has become environment-friendly. At least we have started thinking about how our habits are causing harm to nature. We have started to understand the importance of green spaces when all that we see around is the concrete jungle which isn’t all that pretty to look at!

In a laudable initiative taken up by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the eco-park, called ‘Prakriti’ has finally opened. The park has been constructed from the waste material from various metro sites in the city.

It has been unveiled by Justice Swatanter Kumar, Chairperson, National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The major attractions are 12 huge installations which have been made by various artists from all over the country using waste materials from the metro construction sites. A statement by the DMRC said,

“The main highlights of the park are the artistic installations created from waste materials generated from the Delhi Metro’s construction sites. Artists from across the country have come together to create these beautiful installations.”

The park is situated near Shastrinagar in a sprawling 10-acre area. The park mostly operates on solar energy. It has a lake and fountain inside. It also boasts of a gymnasium, auditorium, amphitheatre, playground and a meditation corner.

The park also has a specially designed ‘rain forest’. The water required for the plants come from a Sewage Water Treatment Plant nearby. The DMRC has also used “top soil from various underground station sites” and many “medicinal and pollution absorbing plants” were planted.

It is due to this that the park has received ‘Platinum’ rating from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC)’.

Justice Swatanter Kumar, Chairman of NGT, applauded this initiative and said,

“(The) DMRC has not only contributed excellence in transportation but it stands out for two more things — it is environmentally conscious and it makes the effort to be self-reliant.”

“With the Prakriti Park, (the) DMRC has begun a new chapter in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). It will set a good precedence for others in the corporate sector.”

This is a proud park not only for Delhi but also for our country. Delhi alone produces a waste of 4000 tonnes from construction/demolition related activity PER DAY. Imagine the corresponding figure for India! We need more such green initiatives but as of now, kudos to DMRC for such a beautiful idea!
