We come across news about conmen and their daredevil-ness almost every other day. As dismaying as it sounds, it is more common than you think and it is getting more advanced with each passing incident. Thanks to modern day technology fraudsters hide behind the dark-lanes of the inter-web and the rest is for the world to read.

Well, unfortunately, there is an addition to the long list of existing crimes and it does very little to curb the growing cases of duping schemes. In fact, it even raises questions we didn’t bother ourselves with before!

According to Hindustan Times, Delhi police has nabbed a 21-year-old Shivam Chopra from Delhi who has managed to dupe an e-commerce portal for over Rs 52 Lakh.

While a report on NDTV stated the portal to be Amazon, it is the means of the fraud that will baffle you.

He ordered expensive mobile phones and sought refunds by claiming he received an empty box! Milind Dumbere, DCP (north-west) said,

In April and May, Shivam Chopra allegedly sought refunds on 225 mobile phones and managed to trick the company into making a refund on 166 occasions.

A resident of Tri Nagar, Shivam who is a hotel management graduate, made a business out of the deal, ordering Apple, Samsung and OnePlus mobile phones.

Explaining his money-minting scheme the DCP added that he managed to do that by tricking the delivery boys and a lot of fake sim cards. A telecom store owner, Sachin Jain, helped him access those.

“Chopra procured 141 SIM cards and created more than 50 email IDs using those numbers. He created many accounts on the e-commerce app and began ordering mobile phones.
When the delivery boy would be unable to trace the address, he would call Chopra for directions. Chopra would then call him to a random place and receive the product by paying cash. This process would ensure his real identity was never known.”

But his game-plan went for a toss when the internal investigating team at Amazon looked and found that all the transactions all the purchases were being made from one particular neighbourhood in Tri Nagar. And that is exactly when they decided to lodge a complaint.

While the culprit has been arrested nothing takes away from the fact that the story throws light on the loopholes in online trade and portals that facilitate the same.
