Dexter’s Laboratory had always been one of my favourite cartoons as a kid. Although just a child, he was able to build fully functioning robots and computers all by himself.
Jayant Parab, a 16-year-old from Mumbai is a real life Dexter and has built a functioning computer out of nothing but scrap.
He built the computer using a screen found in operation theatres, and made the body out of acrylic, that he cut out himself. Even as a child, Jayant accompanied his father, a small-time scrap dealer, and collected items that he thought would be useful at home.
In class 5 itself, Jayant had managed to repair a disposed off laptop using scrap he had picked up, which kindled his passion for computers. Jayant dropped out of school in class 9, however, his clarity about what he aspires for in life is better than most!
“I want to make affordable computers… What you see is the first step towards achieving my dream.”
9,400 tonnes of e-waste is generated in Mumbai every year out of which only 3,000 tonnes is processed.
The scrap that Jayant uses is usually “as bad as it could get”, but he manages to modify them and makes them as good as new. He feels that such computers could be used by poor families who are unable to afford a brand new computer.
Do we have an Indian Michael Dell in the making? We will just have to wait and watch!
