Former Doordarshan Anchor Dies In Mumbai After A Coconut Tree Falls On Her

Coconut-Tree-Anchor-Death

Mumbai rains are deadly, Mumbaikars exclaim metaphorically. But, sadly that came true literally. In a shocking incident, a former anchor lost her life after succumbing to injuries from a tree that fell upon her.

On July 21 morning, 57-year-old Kanchan Raghunath was taking a morning stroll at Chembur’s Swastik Park. It was then that a coconut tree fell upon her injuring her head.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital by the passers-by where she was put in the intensive care unit. But sadly she breathed her last on July 22’s morning.

Rajat Nath, Kanchan’s husband told India Today,

“Because of the negligence of some officials my wife lost her life. A case should be registered for murder charges against the officials. The incident took place very early morning, if it was little an hour late so many school children use that road, they could have come under it.”

Surprisingly, an application was filed to cut the same tree on February 17, this year, and a fee of Rs. 1,380 was also deposited. But, BMC officials deemed the tree healthy after inspection and didn’t let the society cut it down.

BMC is in news quite a lot lately. You must be versed with the RJ Malishka jingle, ‘Mumbai tula BMC var Bharosa nai ka’, which has irked BMC and Shiv Sena. They tried slapping a 500 crore defamation suit against Maliksha, but people slammed them instead.

And, of course, how can we forget VJ José‘s video survey of Bandra’s pothole situation.

The shortcomings on BMC’s part are catching everyone’s eyes now. But due to negligence, a life was lost.

The investigations for Raghunath’s case are still on and so far no FIR has been filed. The local councillor, Asha Marathe has demanded action from the BMC and an enquiry for the accused officials responsible for being negligent.

The Chembur resident was also a yoga instructor and had worked for Doordarshan as an anchor.

This is saddening and frustrating at the same time. After bridges, flyovers now trees are falling on people. The infrastructure of our country really needs to improve. Because a life doesn’t come so easy and is definitely not to be lost this easily.
