While tamarind rice and sweet pongal make up as the usual prasad offered to devotees in Chennai’s temples; there’s a modern temple in the suburbs that serves burgers, brownies, cracker sandwiches and cherry tomatoes salad as prasadam. Yeah! Cool, right?
Jaya Durga Peetham Temple — in the suburbs of Chennai — is not only modern in terms of serving prasad, but also in service.
You can slip a token into vending machines and collect boxes of ‘pret-a-prasadam’, which is prepared with precision in the automated temple kitchen.
And the food there is authorised by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India certified with manufactured, expiry and best before dates stamped on every serving.
Of course, the word of modernity of the temple is spreading in lands far and wide and has piqued interests in all. Speaking about it K Sri Sridhar, a herbal oncologist who helped set up the temple, says,
Not only that, as a part of a new scheme, the temple treats their devotees with birthday-cake-prasadam.
“We maintain a computerised register of their birth dates and addresses and door deliver a cake prasadam to them. It’s a hit among the elderly devotees, because coming from the temple it adds a special touch to the occasion.”
Sweetly surprised was one such 81-year-old devotee Subbulakshmi. It was her first birthday surprise ever and she was utterly delighted.
“It was so pretty with flowers and icing. And it came with an agar deepam (a traditional oil lamp) instead of candles which was so nice. Just like they light at the temple.”
Such a lovely concept. And, isn’t it awesome!?
*intends to plan a darshan trip asap*
