If You Had To Change One Sad Truth About India To Make It Better…What Would That Be?

India is a land of contrasts and contradictions. It’s a land of peace, love, hate and a lot of other emotions. You can probably spend a lifetime and yet fail to understand India’s vast complexities.

This article can therefore easily be converted into a book, but I will try and compress it into a few points.

Everyone in India is a part of a big race. Unfortunately, I am also a part of it. We all are in a hurry to be successful. But sometimes, I feel what success is?

We all know life is beautiful and that we are going to die one day. So why don’t we make the most of it and make India richer before we die?

I know many people who have already chosen to step up and march towards a perfect future…and most of us reading this wants a better, stronger and richer nation.

But the question is, where do you want India to be 25 years from now? I know, there are probably a billion answers to this.

Here’s a list of 12 long and short term problems that need to change for better.

1. Improper Waste Management

How about an effective garbage collection and disposal system. We litter on the streets and then blame others. If a random guy drops a chocolate wrapper, a third person sees that and thinks it’s okay. He then drops his own trash and this is how it keeps on piling up. If a place already looks clean, a person would think twice to litter it.

2. ‘Maa’ and ‘Baba’ are worshipped across the country

Wake up, please. Don’t you remember how Akshay Kumar’s OMG & Aamir Khan’s PK had brought out the realities behind the people who call themselves God. Don’t you think that it’s better to give some food & clothes to the less fortunate? Stop worshipping all ‘Maa’s and ‘Baba’s.

3. Even after independence, so many people live in a condition like this

Although a lot of progress has already taken place, much still remains to improve the lives of the less privileged. We still have millions who live miserable lives. There is always a struggle for resource utilisation – whether a road in the city should be developed first or a water pipeline in a village.

4. Grades and marks are given more importance than actual learning

Most students do not care how much they learn, as long as they get a good grade. And some teachers really don’t care about the students learning either, they just want to give the students easy work, to give them a good grade, either because it’s less time consuming to grade or they want to look better. Yes, the education system is flawed.

5. Corruption, Corruption and Corruption

It would not surprise me at all if someone discovers that the richest man in the world resides in India. Corruption is everywhere. It can go away with the introduction of a bill or implementing ideas. Removing corruption completely will be a slow process because it’s built within the system but trust me…IT WILL.

6. Poverty – Thousands of people live on the streets

With no basic education and etiquette, most children are forced to beg or steal. Families living in such situations sell their children off to traffickers or end up teaching their children to steal and other sexual crimes as well.

7. Girls and women are still forced into prostitution

Prostitution comes about as a result of poverty. But tell me one thing, why does a porn star receive godly treatment while prostitutes are looked down upon?

8. The declining importance of educators

If all the money and resources allocated for improving education had been properly used, India would have been a much more literate nation by now. It is sad that today neither the teachers nor the taught are given the importance they deserve in this society. Teachers and professors in government institutions are poorly paid. This needs to be changed and teachers should be given more importance in society.

9. The growth and growth of population

No one dares to talk about population control, leave alone doing anything about it. There are just too many of us. What can we do? It’s not possible to dump our own people into the Indian Ocean. Illiteracy is the major reason for the excessive population. So why not educate people and control our population?

10. The ‘Fair and Lovely’ complex

For years, I have seen advertisements play on TV showing viewers show Fair and Lovely makes you fair and beautiful. Unfortunately, the benchmark for beauty among Indians have been set as fair skin. Brown is beautiful and we need to accept that. We should be free from such biases and prejudices.

11. People assume public places as toilets

People are chilled out and go around peeing on walls in India. Initially, it smells bad and later that turns into a roadside garbage dump. This issue probably stems from the lack of public provided toilets and so we cannot entirely blame the people. It’s not easy to make sure that every place has a facility, but I am pretty sure if looked around, one could find a public toilet.

12. When half of India protests, the other half is scared to participate

The youths of India are the game changers of any elections. But shouldn’t everyone participate in building our nation?

But, things are slowly changing now. I hope I live to see that day when 1.2 billion Indians or maybe more, will stop complaining and start acting.

If you had the power, what is the one thing you would have changed?
