I Don’t Want A Daughter: Divyanka Tweets To Narendra Modi After Chandigarh Schoolgirl Rape

While all of India was immersed in the festivities of 70 years of Indian Independence, the ordeal which befell a minor girl clearly points out that we are far from the independence of women and girls in the country.

With Assam struggling to survive on their own, overcome by floods and 50 percent of the country’s population falling victims to the sexual and social domination of patriarchy, I do not think this was what we expected out of 7 decades of India’s independence.

As reported by Times Of India, a 12-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted and raped at knife point when she was returning home, after attending Independence Day celebrations at her school. The incident occurred in Chandigarh city inside the Children Traffic Park in Sector 23.

The girl who was subjected to the disgusting crime was a student of Class VIII in a Government school.

Following the news, actress Divyanka Tripathi took to Twitter to express her fear and shock at the gruesome incident. She tweeted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioning his ‘Beti Bachao Campaign’.

The ‘Yeh hai Mohabbattein’ actress, in a series of tweets, wrote that she is scared of having a girl child because of the social state of women in India.

Being granted voting rights has not given women the social status as it was anticipated by our sex. The series of tweets clearly showcase the anguish of the actress which echoes through the hearts of many.

The actress appealed to the Prime Minister to grant severe punishments to culprits who are a menace to women’s security and the society.

It seems that Divyanka Tripathi has been jolted by the incident as are all of us. Women security has been a huge matter of concern in recent times, where fresh reports of assault and rape have shaken the country awake from the deep slumber of patriarchal norms. The question of the hour, however, is how many appeals and decades will it take for women to finally feel safe in India?
