Carolina Marin Says She Will Not ‘Allow’ Saina Nehwal To Become No. 1 In Badminton Again

Caroline Marin’s sports idol has always been Rafael Nadal. She has likened her playing style to his. But unlike Marin, Nadal has had real rivalries in his career. And unlike Marin, Rafael Nadal is a true sportsman.

Nadal’s rivalries have been very intense, be it with Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic. Yet, he has never, ever said something like “Won’t let Roger Federer take the No. 1 spot in rankings.” Because that would be something very unsportsmanlike for him.

Let’s make one thing very clear – Carolina Marin is NOTHING like Rafael Nadal.

Because speaking to Hindustan Times at a promotional event in New Delhi, Carolina Marin came out and said that she will not allow Saina Nehwal to reach the number one ranking in badminton.

“But of course, I will not allow her to reach the world number one ranking because I will be fighting for the same.”

She was asked what she felt about Saina Nehwal’s comeback after her knee injury. Nowhere in the question did the reporter ask her about the number one ranking.

Carolina Marin also added that she is very happy that the top level of badminton is very competitive.

“The top 10 has players from India as well as other countries from Asia, and I feel all these players are almost at the same level. The gap among the top players is too little.”

Yes, the scene at the top level of ANY SPORT is competitive, Carolina.

Intense competition does not, however, mean saying things like “I will not let player XYZ reach the number one ranking.” And especially if that person has just recovered from a knee surgery. It makes no sporting sense.

Rafael Nadal is your sporting icon. Learn some humility and grace from him. And then you can try to actually go beyond your Olympic medal and become a humble champion.
