Sikh Cab Driver Tejinder Singh Named ‘Australian Of The Day’ For Feeding Homeless & Needy

There are many people who talk the talk but don’t actually walk the walk. Tejinder Singh is not one of those people.

On the last Sunday of every month, Tejinder Singh returns from his work as a taxi driver and cooks a feast of Indian cuisine. He packs it into the van and drives to Darwin’s Nightcliff foreshore where he feeds the homeless and the needy.

This has been going on for more than three years. Recently he got recognized as “Australian of the Day” for his humanitarian act.

Tejinder Singh, who is from Punjab and wears the traditional turban, works as an air conditioner mechanic by day and as a taxi driver by night.

Following a gruelling 12 hour night shift, he prepares food (chickpeas, rice and vegetarian curry) for 5 hours in the morning which he then packs into huge containers and serves as a free lunch for the hungry people of Darwin city.

The van which Tejinder drives around Darwin to deliver free food has a sign offering free food “for hungry and needy people.”
