The young and impressionable users who use the Internet, follow every trend on the web to appear hip to their peers, and this wild chase of social acceptance has led our youth astray. An embodiment of this was the ‘Blue-whale’ game which engaged the curiosity of many young children and claimed over 130 lives.
The game was created by a 22-year-old, Philipp Budeikin, who was sentenced by a Siberian Court to three years of jail for inciting the youth to kill themselves.
However, the arrest did not have the necessary effect as the game still continued to gain traction and claim more lives.
Fortunately, recent developments indicate that a 17-year-old was arrested in the Khabarovsk Krai region of Russia, for allegedly being the mastermind behind the game.
Reportedly, the girl was heading multiple groups operating under the same name and was giving death threats to people who refused to follow the instructions, either against them or their family.
The Russian investigators told Metro that, the girl was initially playing the game but did not end up taking her life. Instead, she chose to become an admin of the game to manipulate and encourage others to commit suicide.
The girl was allegedly setting 50 tasks for the victims to be completed in 50 days which were meant to be psychologically traumatising, from watching horror movies to self-harm, with the final stage demanding that they commit suicide.
With these developments, we hope the tyranny of the Blue-whale game over the youth ends and the arrest finally brings about some positive change. The game has used our thirst for social acceptance to bring horrific results and it needs to shut down.
