10 Best Things That Happened In 2016 That Prove It Was Not That Bad A Year, After All

Thank God! 2016 is gone. Phew!

In about just a week into 2017, and with the dreadful 2016 behind us, we are sort of relieved. Aren’t we? But a part of us is still hungover on the year that went by. And, in hindsight, it must’ve seemed like a total jerk of a year, but there were good bits too.

Here are 10 best things that happened in, the otherwise shitty, 2016.

1. India Netflix-es and Chills

Netflix came to India in the beginning of 2016 and ever since then, ‘Netflix and Chill’ has become a routine in our land too. Too many shows, films and documentaries to watch. Too much binging to do. Damn!

2. Leo won the Oscar

That was an epic moment when Leonardo DiCaprio ended his Oscar dry spell. The ace actor got an Academy Award for Alejandro Inarritu’s ‘The Revenant’, FINALLY!

3. R+L= J came true, almost

‘Game of Thrones’ fans were on a happy high when ‘The Winds of Winter’ blew in their favour. The theory, fans had been speculating for years, that Jon Snow is Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark’s son almost came true. Well, I say almost because the grotesque ‘GoT’ian part of me is hoping for an exceptional twist in the story. Also, I am waiting for George R.R Martin’s version of the truth in his sixth book.

4. Pokémon Go made us go Wowza!

July 6 was a big day for all Pokémon lovers. Niantic made our virtual dreams come true and we had only one mission in life – Gotta catch ’em all! And, many did. But, I am still looking for my Pikachu. *sighs*

5. Harry Potter And The Cursed Child teased Potterheads

J.K. Rowling made every Potterhead’s year by releasing the two-part play – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – about Harry James Potter’s life, nineteen years after the events in ‘Deathly Hallows’. And people just couldn’t keep calm.

6. India’s daughters left indelible mark at Olympics

Indian ladies just ruled the sports scene last year. Be it Dipa Karmarkar being the first female gymnast to make it to the Olympics, PV Sindhu‘s Olympic silver for badminton or Sakshi Malik‘s Olympic bronze for wrestling, the ladies made us extremely proud.

7. Bob Dylan got the Nobel Prize for Literature

Times were surely a changin’ when it was announced that the winner of Nobel Prize for Literature is Bob Dylan. And, his fans were on cloud nine. He was bestowed upon with the honour “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

8. From desi girl, Priyanka Chopra became a total videshi girl

2016 was Priyanka Chopra’s year and no one can deny that. From her Emmys’ twirl to getting great response for Quantico, Pee Cee was all over Hollywood. And, not to forget her super-fun chat show appearances. Way to go, gurl!

9. Coldplay came to India

One of my personal favourite moments of the year. Over a lakh people, witnessed Coldplay weave their magic at the ‘Global Citizen India Festival’, last November. And, it was a moment everyone was raving about.

10. India went cashless

Yes, the demonetisation phase sucked and still sucks, but the one good thing that happened amid all the hoopla was that India took its first step toward being cashless. It is indeed a good thing in the longer run, if you think about it.

And, when we Hike-d them up with the new Hike Stories, where you can add live filters, stickers and caption to your moments, they became extra special – just like this crazy moment of friendship!

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to share your love, masti, dosti moments with #MyHikeStory – just go to stories, tap on camera, capture and share!
