Law Students In WB Suspended After They Wrote Hindi Songs, Love Letters, Etc. In Their Exam!

Many of us have listened to the stories of our seniors telling us how they wrote a song’s lyrics in the exam paper because they couldn’t remember the answer! Well, we used to giggle at the incident but we also used to wonder that how can they get away with such a thing because exams are supposed to be a serious matter.

The Gour Banga University in West Bengal has suspended 10 students for 2 years for writing lyrics in the exam. Gopalchandra Misra, the vice chancellor, said,

We have decided to suspend the candidature of the 10 students for two years for writing all those in the answer sheets. But we are not cancelling their registration number to give them a second chance.

They can take readmission in the same course after two years. If we had left the offenders unpunished more students could have behaved in the same way.

These 10 fourth semester students of law from Balurghat Law College wrote love stories, lyrics and abusive words in their answer sheets! One student wrote,

“TU SHAYAR HAIN MAIN TERI SHAYERI..”

While another one wrote about her whims,

“O KAKHONO AMAR KATHA SUNE CHOLE NA, O SUDHU NIJER KOTHAI CHALE (SHE DOES NOT LISTEN TO WHAT I SAY, SHE FOLLOWS HER OWN WHIMS).”

72 students from the Balurghat Law College had appeared for the fourth-semester exam out of which ONLY 1 passed! Many also scored zero. Ironically, students were shocked by the result and protested against it by damaging the college and the cabin of their principal. Vice Chancellor of the university commented by saying,

It is clear from the answer sheets that the students didn’t have the foggiest idea of the answers. They wrote nonsense and even abusive language to kill time in the hall.

They should have a clear idea what is legal and what is illegal. Vandalising an institution is also illegal.”

The suspended students are not allowed to take admission in any institution for two years. However, they can enrol themselves for distance learning courses.

This is a welcome decision especially when we need to make the best use of our demographic dividend.
