Minor Girl’s Rape In Assam Is A Horrifying Deja Vu Of The Nirbhaya Case. Will It Stop?

A horrifying case has come to light in Assam, where a 13-year-old minor girl was raped inside the bus. The case holds a striking similarity to the Nirbhaya case that happened in Delhi. This young girl was sent to Gachbari village in Baksa by her mother to work as a housemaid in a resident on August 16. However, she did not like the place and fled the house to go back to her hometown, Sonitpur.

She had taken a bus to Sonitpur but after reaching Guwahati, she was allegedly tricked by the driver and the handyman who told her that they were taking her to her hometown. During late evening, the bus reached Uporkhuti village where the driver and the handyman allegedly raped her inside the bus.

The girl escaped in the morning and reached the village close by which was Atrighat. She informed the people in the village about the incident and the came forward to help her. A complaint was filed against the driver, Arshad Ali and the handyman Rubul Ali. Both of them are absconding since then.

Many local organizations have come forward to support her and ensure that the culprits are found and punished.

It is quintessential that these cases come under notice, especially in the smaller areas where awareness is low and people refrain from filing complaints. Moreover, in metro cities and other developed cities, such incidents are brought into light and justice is sought. But in smaller towns and villages, such incidents are often ignored or forgotten.

Moreover, it has been two years since the Nirbhaya case, but the fight is still not over. The horror that the incident spread across society is not the one we can easily get over. While moral police and extremist groups form the guidelines of right and wrong behavior for women, the crime committed against women doesn’t seem to come to an end.
