Flood-hit Assam Celebrates 15th Aug In Torso-Deep Water And The Internet Salutes In Respect

The country celebrated its 70th Independence Day yesterday with the incomparable vigour and exuberance! All citizens of the country saluted the tricolour and the undying spirit of every leader, who sacrificed their life for the nation.

While Assam witnessed its worst floods in the history, with more than 31 lakh people affected, the spirit of the state on Independence Day was not a bit diminished by the torso-deep water.

People all over the state hoisted flags and the pictures have given us the feeling which words fail to describe. The most widely shared picture is that of two kids and teachers honouring the flag in waters that is almost reaching to their faces. Sushmita Sen shared it too.

According to an FB post, it’s the Naskara Lower Primary School, Dhubri district, Assam. It has been submerged in water since Aug 13. Only 6 people could gather to celebrate India’s Independence. A teacher spoke to HT and said,

“We couldn’t do much due to the flooding. We sang the national anthem and Vande Mataram. Since, small children can’t be in water for long, we dispersed the assembly early.”

Many pictures from Assam went viral that are a testimony to their undying spirit. People have been widely sharing these pictures as they are unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

My vocabulary doesn’t allow me to comment on how brave these people are. Uniting in the times of distress, just to celebrate the greatest of all nations.

People of this good country couldn’t help but applaud the unmatched spirit of the people of Assam. Love and respect poured on social media.

1. Words fall short.

2. Jai Hind…

3. Nothing makes us prouder!

4. Couldn’t have said it better!

5. The best, ever.

Countless people have been affected from the Assam floods. They don’t have food or shelter. 25 districts are in peril and still these BRAVE men, women and children are UNSTOPPABLE.

Social media has united to share the pictures and celebrate Assam’s brave-hearts. But the truth is, a day later, everything is forgotten and we go back to our lives and they are left to suffer. Honestly, it’s hypocritical of all of us to not pay heed to a suffering Assam and react/applaud when it does something extraordinary.

Nevertheless, boats and rooftops of Assam on the glorious day of 15th August were lit and their unparalleled courage will go on to inspire every citizen of the country, forever.
