12 YO Ananya WINS 2017 National Spelling Bee And Is The 18th Indian-Origin Kid To Do So!

Some people are blessed with unmatched intelligence! And, when it is coupled with all the hard work in the world, nothing or no one, has the ability to stop them.

Meet 12-year-old Ananya Vinay, from Fesco, California. The sixth grader who won the 2017 Scrips National Spelling Bee by competing and spelling words for a rigorous 12 hours! She is taking home this huge cup and a prize money of $40,000 (more than 25 Lakhs).

Held at Washington’s Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, the competition saw many great, wonderful kids. The second runner’s up of the competition, Rohan misspelled the word ‘marram’, which is a type of ocean grass.

 

Ananya Vinay is the 18th Spelling Bee champion of Indian heritage and also the first winner since 2013, to claim the title alone. Her winning word was ‘marocain’, which is of French origin. It’s a kind of fabric that is derived from ribbed crepe.

 

Before Ananya could realise that she had won the competition, her father and mother came and hugged her tight and proud. Her entire family was on stage and their happiness couldn’t be put in words. The little bright girl also said –

Out of 22 spelling bee’s that have taken place in the US since 1996, 18 of the winners are of Indian-origin. This just goes on to prove that brown students have incredible potential and if given a chance, they can slay it in any part of the world.
