It’s High Time Bollywood Acknowledged Akshaye Khanna’s Potential And Gave Him His Due

Akshaye Khanna

Being a star kid comes with a lot of expectations and responsibilities. And, people are always looking for a chance to write you off. Something similar happened with Akshaye Khanna, younger son of yesteryear superstar Vinod Khanna.

Around the time of his debut in ‘Himalay Putra’ (1997), tinseltown was abuzz with the news of new star kid on the block and he did make a promising debut.

But as time went by, Akshaye earned a reputation of being highly moody and choosy about his films. All things said you can’t deny the acting potential the younger Khanna has.

Here are seven reasons why we feel, Akshaye is one of the most underrated actors of Bollywood.

1. He started with his father’s production venture which didn’t go on to be a highest-grosser. But, still Akshaye managed to leave a mark on his audiences with ‘Border’.

2. Though being in multi-starrer movies he didn’t get overshadowed. Remember ‘Dil Chahta Hai’? He made an impact, despite having stars like Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan. Same goes for ‘Border’ and for ‘Taal’.

3. He got type-casted easily. Like, if he was playing the baddie in movies, he went on to do similar roles a la ‘Humraaz’, ‘Dewaangee’, ‘Race’. Same goes for his lover-boy image on the celluloid.

4. Making people laugh is a pretty tough job but he managed to crack the code and gave us some hilarious one-liners while being a part of entertaining slapstick comedies like ‘Hulchul’, ‘Hungama’, etc.

5. On-screen, Akshaye shone brightly in meatier roles like in ‘Gandhi, My Father’ or ‘Aakrosh’. But sadly, he never could be a standalone hero. Maybe, Bollywood never saw him as a one-hero film and he was offered character roles.

6. The fact that he is a superstar’s son overshadowed his career. From the very first film, he was constantly compared to his father. So audiences’ judgment was shrouded.

7. He confesses being an oddball as he chooses things differently and not socialise the Bollywood way. And, even says how he has zero PR and networking skills, which by some odd way is the need of the hour.

Though it isn’t a bad thing, is it?

In a career spanning over two decades and with more than 30 films, Akshaye has left quite a mark in the industry and we just hope he gets his due credit. After all, he has proven his mettle and shown us what he is capable of. All he needs is a right film, and he will be earning his stripes right back on.
