Life, we all know, can be very cruel. At times there are no second chances and the rest is a fleeting moment that leaves us with no respite, often without the chance itself. But like they say, life is not what happens to you but how you react to it. It is all about how you choose to brush the dirt and take on life, face-to-face.

And that is exactly what this 26-year-old brave woman from Mumbai did. Her story of courage and gumption is not only inspiring but a heart-filling read for all the hopeless romantics.

Meet Lalita Ben Bansi who, after braving an acid attack and 17 facial reconstruction surgeries, got married to the man of her dreams, Ravi Shankar, a 27-year-old lad. The new bride at her reception said,

“Miracles do happen. Who would have thought an acid attack and 17 surgeries later I would find love. But it happened. And it all started with a wrong number.”

Yes, a wrong number! They got to know each other over the past two months and decided to get married. The couple tied the knot at the Thane court on Tuesday.

Lalita, however, has seen a lot before happiness knocked her door. Earlier in 2012, Lalita’s cousin threw acid on her over a minor argument.

“So many surgeries later, too, my face was deformed. In need for change, I moved from Azamgarh to Kalwa in Thane near Mumbai. Shankar taught me to believe in love. It is a fresh start.”

The shy groom added,

“I liked her from the beginning. I had to only convince my mother to accept my choice. I had to make Lalita believe that she too had the right to a better life.”

Shankar who works as a CCTV operator at a private firm in Kandivali and owns a petrol pump in Ranchi also said that he has left the decision of choosing a place to settle, to his wife.

That’s not it. Her story is so inspiring that even Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, who has earlier voiced his voice against the abhorrent practice of acid attacks, was in attendance to bless the newly wed.

“Lalita is a true hero because she proves to thousands of acid attack survivors across the nation that this isn’t a full stop, just a comma, life has so many possibilities!”

One for the books, isn’t it? May this be just the beginning. We wish the bride and groom a happy married life!
