For 57 Years, This 83-Year-Old Man Has Performed Funeral Rites For 550 Unclaimed Bodies.

“For me there is only one religion and that is humanity”- Mithalal Sindhi.

Mithalal Sindhi epitomes the sentiment of humanity and selflessness. This kind soul has bid farewell to 550 unclaimed bodies by performing their last rites and by bidding them a farewell they deserve. What makes this story even more extraordinary is that he is 83 years old and has been living on the footpaths of Ahmedabad for last 60 years.

“I am 83 years old, have been living on the footpath since last 60 years and believe me I am satisfied with what life has given to me. I have been sent on earth by God to perform this beautiful activity. This city remembers me whenever an unclaimed dead body is found and I am happy about it.”

Mithalal’s humble deeds do not end here. Despite having children who are well off, he chooses to live on the street because that is the only way people can find him. Each funeral costs him about 1500 rupees and he earns his money by selling Bajra.

“For society, it might just be an unclaimed dead body, but for me if it’s an aged woman, then she is like my mother, if it’s a young boy then he is like my son, if it’s a middle aged woman, then she is like my younger sister. I couldn’t perform the last rites of my own father but I don’t feel sad about it. For me, all those who died are my family in some way or the other.”

Mithalal is an exceptional individual has given a dignity to all those even after they are gone.
